HHZ showed up in German vape and flower shops over the last year, and the marketing calls it HHC's natural successor. That phrase implies something settled, a known structure, the kind of thing THC or even THCh already has. It isn't settled. Ask five vendor pages what the compound actually is and you'll get five different answers: a hydroxylated HHC isomer here, a different hydrogenation pattern there, and no two competitor comparison pages telling the same structural story twice. That gap between the marketing and the actual chemistry is the story here, and this article isn't going to smooth it over.

HHZ, sometimes spelled Hexahydrocannabizol and sometimes Hexahydrocannabizinol, gets marketed as a semi-synthetic cannabinoid in the same hydrogenated family as HHC. That much, vendors agree on. Past that point, the agreement stops. Some pages describe it as a hydroxylated variant of HHC, a hydroxyl group added somewhere on the ring structure. Others describe a different modification entirely, without saying where (vendors rarely do). A hydroxyl-group claim tied to a specific carbon position does circulate in vendor copy, but it couldn't be confirmed against any primary source, so treat it as unverified if you come across it.
Real hydroxylated HHC compounds do exist in the scientific literature. 8-OH-HHC, 9-OH-HHC, and 11-OH-HHC are documented under their own names, and none of them is ever called HHZ. HHZ doesn't correspond to established chemical nomenclature anywhere. It reads like a vendor-coined marketing label riding on real hydroxylation chemistry. Borrowed credibility, dressed up as nomenclature.

Vendors describe the process as catalytic hydrogenation of CBD, the same basic industrial route used to make HHC. Catalytic hydrogenation adds hydrogen atoms across a double bond using a metal catalyst under pressure.
It's a real, well-understood reaction, used across the whole semi-synthetic cannabinoid trade. What's less clear is where HHZ is supposed to diverge from HHC in that reaction. Some sourcing describes an added hydroxylation step. Others just reuse HHC's standard synthesis description and swap the name (efficient, if nothing else). This is a manufacturing claim from the same vendors selling the finished product, plain and simple, and no lab report or published method backs it up anywhere. If you're hoping to verify any of it yourself, there's nothing public to check it against. Nobody selling it claims a natural, plant-derived origin either.
Three formats account for nearly everything on shelves:

No controlled human studies of HHZ exist. Nothing measuring dose-response, onset, duration, or safety has been published anywhere we looked. What circulates instead is forum chatter and vendor-page copy, repeated often enough to sound like consensus, though nothing behind it has actually been tested. Hedged hard, this is what people report:
For general context only: THC-family cannabinoids are understood to act mainly through the CB1 receptor, part of the endocannabinoid system first mapped out in Devane et al.'s 1992 discovery of anandamide (Science). That explains how compounds in this family are believed to work, broadly speaking. It says nothing specific about HHZ. No receptor-binding studies exist for this particular compound, not yet.
Format might shape more than onset speed. Some anecdotal reports describe vaped HHZ as feeling stronger or faster than flower at a similar labelled dose. Nobody's measured that anywhere though, and it could just as easily be inconsistent dosing between products doing the work.
So is it psychoactive? Anecdotally, yes, in a THC-like direction. Clearer or more focused than HHC? Maybe, for some people. Nobody can honestly claim more than that; less has been measured here than for almost any other cannabinoid currently sold in Europe.
Driving and fitness to drive. HHZ's own marketing frames it as psychoactive, and that alone carries real legal weight behind the wheel in Germany. Section 24a of the Straßenverkehrsgesetz (StVG) lists THC by name and penalises driving under its influence, independent of a compound's separate status under the BtMG or NpSG. Whether that per-se limit directly captures non-THC cannabinoids like HHZ isn't fully settled in German legal commentary, but courts and police treat impaired driving from any psychoactive substance seriously, HHZ included. What's genuinely unclear is whether a compound this new, this poorly defined, even has an established testing method or threshold yet. Nothing confirming one turned up. Worth knowing before you're anywhere near a wheel.
Stand: mid-2026. HHZ isn't specifically named in the Betäubungsmittelgesetz (BtMG) or the Neue-psychoaktive-Stoffe-Gesetz (NpSG). That's a reading from current legal commentary, not a government ruling, and it rests on a structural-formula-exclusion argument: the compound's marketed structure doesn't match anything explicitly listed in either law's current annex. That's narrower protection than the word "legal" implies. The NpSG carries an Analogklausel, a structural-similarity clause that can catch a compound without it being individually named, if its structure is judged close enough to something already on the list.
HHC was restricted under the NpSG on 27 June 2024, via the 5th NpSG amendment ordinance. Then 10-OH-HHC, a related hydroxy-HHC compound, followed on 2 December 2025 under the sixth. Two closures in this compound family in roughly two years, and each one arrived after the newly restricted compound had already spent time marketed as the legal alternative. A 7th NpSG amendment is expected around autumn 2026, with commentary mentioning THCB, THCH, THCJD, PHC, and possibly 9H-HHC as candidates. HHZ wasn't found named as a confirmed candidate for the next round, which says nothing about its long-term safety or legal standing. Given the family's structural kinship and its recent history, treat the current legal position as temporary, and check it again before you rely on it.
This compound hasn't gone through the process that gives other cannabinoids their definitions. No scientific body has characterised it, so nothing anchors what vendors actually claim. A few specific things explain why the term stays this loose, and why you'll get a different answer depending on which vendor page you land on.
PHC is worth a brief mention here too, a related and similarly undefined cannabinoid facing the same absence of a settled definition. Different compound. Same pattern: a marketed name arriving well before the chemistry that's supposed to back it up, one that doesn't get pointed out often enough.

HHCP is a related hydrogenated cannabinoid with a longer carbon side chain than HHC, the structural feature behind its stronger reported binding. HHZ is the newest and least-defined of the three, marketed as HHC's successor without the structural agreement to back that framing up. HHC and HHCP at least have a stable name and some published data behind them, and this one currently has neither. So which one actually deserves the benefit of the doubt right now? None of them fully, but the other two at least give you real documentation to check the marketing against.

We're writing about it because people keep asking, and if you've gone looking for a straight answer already, you'll have noticed the only German-language pages explaining HHZ are run by the same shops selling it (not exactly neutral ground). This one pushes the familiar new-cannabinoid pattern even further: the marketing has outrun a stable name for the compound it's supposedly selling.
Our approach doesn't change here. Publish what's confirmed, flag what isn't, and don't dress up a gap in the evidence as a settled answer. Right now, that gap is the whole story.
